Monterey Bay Aquarium
Multi-facted visual identity
I was hired by the Monterey Bay Aquarium to transition part of the original Exhibits Department into a Print Graphics Department serving the emerging ongoing print needs of the institution. I initiated standards and led a multi-faceted visual identity from scratch, serving the Membership, Marketing, Education, Exhibits and Guest Services departments.
The Inside Story illuminated the design and implementation of the Aquariums’ visual identity to the community, and provided the opportunity to choose from some of the Aquarium’s beautiful rarely-published photography.

Illustration, design and production for a die-cut invitation a special exhibit of marine-themed toys.
Visual organization and project management skills were needed to address the many audiences of the Aquarium’s Education Department. I worked closely with staff writers, educators and program specialists, as I supervised outside illustrators and in-house production staff. Projects such as these allowed me to initiate a library of biologically accurate illustrations, acting as a liason between outside illustrators and in-house aquarists.
Logo design for the Aquaravan: when a school group couldn’t attend an Aquarium field trip, MBA took the experience to their classroom with the Aquaravan. I illustrated the logo design and it’s applications to brochures, classroom materials, and the van itself.
Design for an ongoing series of Member ‘Updates’ current events and unique opportunities, such as sightings of migrating gray whales off the deck, were handed to members as they entered the Aquarium.

Design for a rack brochure, displayed in travel agencies and myriad other locations across the state and beyond, and often a potential visitors’ first interaction with the Monterey Bay Aquarium.
